Weight Lifting Safety

Weightlifting can be a rewarding and challenging experience both physically and mentally. The benefits of weightlifting can be seen by athletes in almost any sport as stronger muscles allow the brain to better control motion of the body. However, there are some risks involved with weightlifting that should be addressed. There are also some sports in which different styles of weightlifting would be beneficial. For example, in golf or other sports in which flexibility is a key aspect of success, lifting very heavy weights for few repetitions can cause the buildup of muscle mass that can inhibit flexibility. In these cases, athletes are being counterproductive and should consider a different style of weightlifting or perhaps combining their lifting with stretching exercises that promote the retainment of flexibility.

Goals and Guidance

Some people turn to books, family, friends, or fellow gym mates for advice about proper lifting techniques. While these may all be good sources of information, it is recommended that beginners seek out the help of a weightlifting professional or coach to teach them the basics of safe and effective lifting. Some gyms provide weightlifting coaches as a perk of membership but if this option is not available, the local high school or college physical fitness instructor is likely to have had some training in the field of weightlifting and can help an individual through the basics. Always try to determine what the desired outcome will be of a weightlifting program. These goals should be centered on the amount of time available for training, current strength level, and the sport for which the training is designed to help prepare. Express these goals to the instructor so that the weight training program can be better tailored to individual needs.

Weightlifting Safety Tips

Most people should not begin weightlifting until they are about 15 years old due to the body’s lack of development. Weightlifters should use a spotter during their routines. A spotter adds the advantage of safety as well as motivation because the spotter can encourage a person verbally during the routine to push extra hard and go that extra mile. Use lifting gloves and make sure that all equipment is in safe, working order before use. These basics should help weightlifters propel themselves to the next level safely.
